Cory

Cory was born in an Ancient Greece-inspired city in the clouds where bird people thrived in secrecy and worshipped a genderless Sun deity. Cory was blessed with their light magic when they were young and they trained in healing as part of the priesthood.
At 17 they travelled down to earth in secret with their younger sister to explore, against the explicit customs and laws of their culture. As their little sister was playing with a group of kids in a village, her wings were discovered by a pair of gatherers. The feathers of bird people are highly coveted for their strong healing properties, and once night fell Cory and their sister were hunted by the gatherers. They were captured and dragged to an old barn out of the town, where their wings were clipped and harvested for feathers. The barn caught fire in a scuffle between Cory and the gatherers, and the siblings were trapped inside, bleeding and wounded, as the gatherers escaped. Cory and their sister suffered severe burns as they tried to drag themselves out of the burning barn, which only went out once rain started to fall in the early morning. Cory's sister succumbed to her injuries the next morning, leaving Cory alone on earth and unable to fly back home. They bury their sister in an unmarked grave and keep moving towns until they're far enough away.
Cory eventually settles near the town of Florist, on the other side of the nearby drowned forest in a small once-abandoned cottage. The house was rumoured to have belonged to a powerful wizard, which Cory uses to keep people away, summoning small lights in the forest to deter the superstitious. They spend their days trying to find a way to heal their wings, only managing to stave off the pain for a while. Once they realise they can't heal their wings, they begin to use their magic to heal the land around them.
They join Aarne, Sam, and Ghost as a healer in their quest to save the continent from the destructive rule of the fire spirit which has possessed the queen. They hide their wings from the world as bird people haven't been seen in hundreds of years since their species was nearly wiped out. They enjoy talking with Ghost, learning her ancient knowledge of plants and animals, and they often stop to take notes in their journal throughout their travels. Initially wary of Sam, they grow closer after Sam discovers Cory's wings and starts to help them heal.
